Hot Top Tuesday: Cat, Bones and Thorn Queens

This Side of the Grave (Night Huntress, Book 5)
This Side of the Grave
It's that time of the year and here come the new releases in multiple series. We've got Jeanine Frost, Kim Harrison, Richelle Mead and more. Be sure to check out all these and more.  Oh and not to forget mentioning the lovely Jaye Wells' release of Green-Eyed Demon, I will be posting my top 10 reasons you should be reading Sabina Kane today too!

This Side of the Grave by Jeaniene Frost

When you are a die hard fan of a series or an author, it feels like a holiday when when a book you have been waiting for is released. Today, it is Christmas and my birthday wrapped into one with the release of This Side of the Grave by Jeaniene Frost. If you haven’t been reading about Cat and Bones in the Night Huntress series, you may be missing out on one of the biggest series in Urban Fantasy Romance.

Cat Crawfield has lived a troubling life. The product of a rape, her relationship with her mother has never been the typical bond between mother and child. The fact that her father was a newly created vampire doesn’t help matters either. Being told over and over that you are an abomination can kill a girls self esteem. Seeking approval from the only family she knows, Cat starts staking any vampire she can lure to her by frequently bars at the age of sixteen. One night she bites off more then she can chew when she tries her normal tactics on the ancient bounty hunter known to many as Bones. After tutelage under Bones, Cat turns into the feared Red Reaper.

Readers have followed the up and downs of Cat and Bones’ professional and romantic relationship. Talk about an emotional roller coaster. This series will keep you laughing until you snort. As this series gains momentum and becomes more elaborate, so does the plot and the world building. There are many quotable passages and Frost’s writing leaps from the pages. I know Jaime and I can’t wait to dig into this book. So bring it on Ms. Frost! We’re in it for the long haul!

Blurb from Goodreads.com:

Danger waits on both sides of the grave.

Half-vampire Cat Crawfield and her vampire husband Bones have fought for their lives, as well as for their relationship. But just when they've triumphed over the latest battle, Cat's new and unexpected abilities threaten to upset a long-standing balance . . .

With the mysterious disappearance of vampires, rumors abound that a species war is brewing. A zealot is inciting tensions between the vampires and ghouls, and if these two powerful groups clash, innocent mortals could become collateral damage. Now Cat and Bones are forced to seek help from a dangerous "ally"—the ghoul queen of New Orleans herself. But the price of her assistance may prove more treacherous than even the threat of a supernatural war . . . to say nothing of the repercussions Cat never imagined.

Darkest Mercy by Melissa Marr

Darkest Mercy (Wicked Lovely)
Darkest Mercy
There will be mixed emotions today due to the release of the conclusion to bestselling series Wicked Lovely. The last book, Darkest Mercy, follows the character we have grown to love through the previous four books as they prepare for war, in some cases against each other.

The Wicked Lovely series follows Ailinn, a teen aged girl who can see fairies that no one else can, her best guy friend and secret crush Seth, and the handsome and tempting Fairy Keenan. Basically, a love triangle with more twists and turns then an episode of the Vampire Diaries. There are girly moments, dark moments and the age old coming to age situations through out the series. It will be interesting to see how Ms. Marr brings the stories to a close.

If you are a fan of the Wicked Lovely series, this is a must buy. If you would like to branch out into a different paranormal experience or want to find out what all the uproar about YA literature is about, then this would be a good series to start with. To learn more about the series, visit Melissa Marr’s website. I am not including a blurb due to spoilers for the series that are included.

Pale Demon by Kim Harrison
Pale Demon (The Hollows, Book 9)
Pale Demon

I find Harrison’s plots to be exciting and complicated but definitely entertaining. It seems that even though Rachel finds herself in dangerous situations she has the tools to get herself out of a disaster. Harrison’s plots are filled with highs and lows and a character we can’t help but love. There is no doubt in my mind that Harrison will give us the same level of excitement in this book.

Blurb from Goodreads.com:

Condemned to death for black magic and shunned, Rachel Morgan has three days to somehow get to the annual witches convention in San Francisco and clear her name. If she fails, the only way she can escape death is to live in the demonic ever after . . . for ever after.

Banned from the flight lists, Rachel teams up with elven tycoon Trent Kalamack, headed for the West Coast for his own mysterious business. But Rachel isn’t the only passenger along for the ride. Can a witch, an elf, a living vampire, and a pixy in one car survive for over 2,300 miles? And that’s not counting the assassin on their tail.

A fearsome demon walks the sunlight, freed after centuries of torment to slay the innocent and devour souls. But his ultimate prey is Rachel Morgan. While the powerful witch with nerves of steel will do whatever it takes to stay alive, even embracing her own demonic nature may not be enough to save her.

Iron Crowned by Richelle Mead

Iron Crowned (Dark Swan, Book 3)
Iron Crowned
Richelle Mead has earned high acclaim through a little series called Vampire Academy. You may of heard of it. I truly hope readers have not stopped at reading her excellent YA series. One of her adult series has an addition to its catalog today. Iron Crowned is the third book in the Dark Swan series about Eugenie, a shaman who happens to use her powers to work as a Mercenary. She seems to find herself being pursued by demons, fairies, shape-shifters and any other species that could live in the otherworld.

Blurb from Iron Crowned:

Shaman-for-hire Eugenie Markham is the best at banishing entities trespassing in the mortal realm. But as the Thorn Land’s queen, she’s fast running out of ways to end the brutal war devastating her kingdom. Her only hope: the Iron Crown, a legendary object even the most powerful gentry fear…

Who Eugenie can trust is the hardest part. Fairy King Dorian has his own agenda for aiding her search. And Kiyo, her shape-shifter ex-boyfriend, has every reason to betray her along the way. To control the Crown’s ever-consuming powers, Eugenie will have to confront an unimaginable temptation--one that will put her soul and the fate of two worlds in mortal peril…

Hunger Untamed by Pamela Palmer

Hunger Untamed: A Feral Warriors Novel
Hunger Untamed
While I have not personally read Palmer’s Feral Warriors series I’ve heard excellent reviews about them. Though similarities exist between this series and the Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward (mainly the names) it feels different. This series has made it onto my to read list. You know I’ll let everyone know if it is worth the hype!

Lauren’s review on the Feral Warriors series from Goodreads.com:

“If you love J.R.Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood or the early Anita Blake books you must read the Feral Warriors books. Pam deftly weaves the hidden world of shape shifting warriors, hot romance, and a non-stop plot into a story I just couldn't put down, even the third time through! “

Blurb from PamelaPalmer.net

For a thousand years she has haunted him—Ariana, queen of the Ilinas, a beauty of mist and light. His love, his life mate... Now she alone holds the power to save two trapped and desperate Feral Warriors.

And when darkness threatens to annihilate both races, the greatest danger of all becomes the glorious love Kougar and Ariana once shared. A love that must never rise again. A love that has never died.

So what are your hot picks for today?
