Hot Top Tuesday: Dragons, Deeds and Desires

The best part of being Tuesday is all the new releases that come out.  For some (like me) they happen on a Monday and for others a Wednesday or perhaps a Friday, but for the majority of the book lovers in the world, it's Tuesday that is the best day of the week.  Tuesday is new release day and for those eager to download to the Kindle or the Nook or waiting for that package from Amazon or for the front doors to open to their favorite corner book shop, Barnes and Noble or Borders (please don't close, fingers crossed),  it's the day they've waited for.   Jaime and Ruthie have put together a fantabulous collection of books for you to choose from and I wanted to throw in my three cents for what they worth.

Voices of Dragons received the Mini Me Seal of Approval (I am a huge Vaughn fan as you can imagine having featured her here at the blog and adore all things Kitty Norville).  Also a big, personal thumbs up to No Regrets by Shannon K. Butcher.  Love, love love all things Butcher (Jim, Shannon and Julie alike!)   So without further ado, be sure to check out Jaime and Ruthie's hot top Tuesday and let us know what your top picks are for today's releases.

Desires of the Dead by Kimbery Derting

Desires of the Dead (Body Finder)
Desires of the Dead
It is no secret that I enjoy reading a good YA book. The mixture of antsy teens being placed in adult situations spells out a good read for me. Books under the heading YA Paranormal are a dime a dozen these day so it always feels good to find one worthy of praise. The Body Finder Series can be included in this category. Today, the second book in this series, Desires of the Dead, is release to the fans who have waited close to a year for the continuation of Violet’s story.

Blurb from Desires of the Dead:

Violet can sense the echoes of those who've been murdered—and the matching imprint that clings to their killers. Only those closest to her know what she is capable of, but when she discovers the body of a young boy she also draws the attention of the FBI, threatening her entire way of life.
As Violet works to keep her morbid ability a secret, she unwittingly becomes the object of a dangerous obsession. Normally she'd turn to her best friend, Jay, except now that they are officially a couple, the rules of their relationship seem to have changed. And with Jay spending more and more time with his new friend Mike, Violet is left with too much time on her hands as she wonders where things went wrong. But when she fills the void by digging into Mike's tragic family history, she stumbles upon a dark truth that could put everyone in danger.

If Desires of the Dead sounds like a book you would like to dive into, I would suggest reading the series from the beginning in The Body Finder. Publishers Weekly praised the book when when they wrote: "Derting's first novel demonstrates unusual skill in weaving together contemporary teenage preoccupations with its paranormal plot twist.. sections from the perspective of the killer add a creepy, page-turning quality. A strong debut from a promising author." To learn more about the series please visit Kimberly Derting website: http://kimberlyderting.com/index.php

The Guy Next Door by Lori Foster, Susan Donavan & Victoria Dahl

If a good Anthology is what you are looking for, I suggest picking up The Guy Next Door. Each of the stories plays out the fantasy of getting a little sexy time with the mysteriously sexy guy who seems out of reach since he is your neighbor. I will warn you that Just one Taste by Victoria Dahl is a teaser for a new trilogy she will release in the future. Reading this anthology may open you up to a whole new series you will have to wait for.

An Excerpt of the review from our friends at Fresh Fiction:
These deliciously sexy stories by 3 of the best romance writers in the business are just what we need to start a Spring fling with hot men and the women who catch their attention. Foster's tale is breathtaking, Donovan's is exhilarating, and Dahl is a bon-a-fide tease. Absolutely perfect!

Voices of Dragons by Carrie Vaughn

Voices of Dragons
Voices of Dragons
Its seem the author of the popular Kitty Norville Series has branched out to YA. Her first contribution to the YA shelves, Voices of Dragons is now available in paperback. Reviews from the Hardcover release average 4.25 stars at Barnes & Noble. If you are a fan sneaking into the teenage mind this a great quick read.

Blurb from Voices of Dragons:

On one side of the border lies the modern world: the internet, homecoming dances, cell phones. On the other side dwell the ancient monsters who spark humanity's deepest fears: dragons.
Seventeen-year-old Kay Wyatt knows she's breaking the law by rock climbing near the border, but she'd rather have an adventure than follow the rules. When the dragon Artegal unexpectedly saves her life, the rules are abruptly shattered, and a secret friendship grows between them.
But suspicion and terror are the legacy of human and dragon inter-actions, and the fragile truce that has maintained peace between the species is unraveling. As tensions mount and battles begin, Kay and Artegal are caught in the middle. Can their friendship change the course of a war?

In her young-adult debut, New York Times bestselling author Carrie Vaughn presents a distinctly twenty-first-century tale of myths and machines, and an alliance that crosses a seemingly unbridgeable divide.

Dreams of a Dark Warrior (Immortals After Dark Series, Book 9)
Dreams of a Dark Warrior
Dreams of a Dark Warrior by Kresley Cole

Kresley Cole is one of the most exceptional writers I’ve had the pleasure to read. I have read the Immortals After Dark series and was pleasantly surprised with her creativity with plotting and the creation of her world. I love her historical romances as well the MacCarrick Brothers series is possibly one of the best Scottish romances for the simple fact that Cole writes excellent Scottish brogue. I have not read this book yet, but I am looking forward to finding out what fabulous yumminess Cole has to offer us in the new installment of the IAD series.

Angelfire by Courtney Allison Moulton

Angelfire
Angelfire
Young Adult books or YA books as Jaime and I like to call them have really become excellent reads for adults. After reading some of the YA books on the market I have found myself pleasantly entertained for hours. My theory, character development in YA books has to be rich and complex to hold the readers interest, therefore, creating complex worlds and using conflict to keep the reader on edge. This book definitely sounds like it will fit that bill. I’m looking forward to picking up a copy.

Blurb from Braintasia Books

This debut, the first novel in a trilogy, is achingly romantic, terrifying, and filled with blistering action.

When seventeen-year-old Ellie starts seeing reapers - monstrous creatures who devour humans and send their souls to Hell - she finds herself on the front lines of a supernatural war between archangels and the Fallen and faced with the possible destruction of her soul.

A mysterious boy named Will reveals she is the reincarnation of an ancient warrior, the only one capable of wielding swords of angelfire to fight the reapers, and he is an immortal sworn to protect her in battle. Now that Ellie's powers have been awakened, a powerful reaper called Bastian has come forward to challenge her. He has employed a fierce assassin to eliminate her - an assassin who has already killed her once.

While balancing her dwindling social life and reaper-hunting duties, she and Will discover Bastian is searching for a dormant creature believed to be a true soul reaper. Bastian plans to use this weapon to ignite the End of Days and to destroy Ellie's soul, ending her rebirth cycle forever. Now, she must face an army of Bastian's most frightening reapers, prevent the soul reaper from consuming her soul, and uncover the secrets of her past lives - including truths that may be too frightening to remember.

No Regrets by Shannon Butcher
Nook Release

No Regrets
No Regrets
Ah, what can I say about Butcher that I haven’t already said before. I love her writing, check. I think she’s brilliant, check. Would I stalk her given the opportunity, check? Oh but we’re not going through my literary crush list are we? Back to business, I fell in love with the Sentinel Wars series by Butcher. Absolutely fantastic, couldn’t put it down type of read. I spent five hours cursing, screaming, and whooping at my book. No Regrets is the first book in her romantic suspense series and it rocks my socks off just as much as her paranormal series. I hope you enjoy her writing as much as I do.

Heather's Top Pick for the Week
Secrets and Shadows: A 13 to Life Novel
Secrets and Shadows

If you like YA (and you know I do), then my pick for this week is the fabulous Shannon Delany's Secrets and Shadows.  This is the follow up to last year's brilliant 13 to Life (another fave).  We return to Shannon's world where Pietr and Jess must face up to the secrets of Pietr's existence and what it means to love and live in a world where nothing’s simple.  Jess Gillmansen thinks she’s seen it all but her eyes are about to be opened to even more danger and a reality far more paranormal than she’s suspected. With Jess’s realization that the Rusakovas’ mother is still alive and imprisoned, the group’s choices become harder and trust more important. Lines are drawn and relationships change as the broken Rusakova family struggles to reunite long enough to free their mother and people who Jess always just took to be normal people show themselves to be much, much more.

What are your top picks for this week?
