Is the Devil in the Details or is it the Bath Water?

Courting Demons
Morning Daily Dosers, we have a bit of treat for you today!  Welcome guest blogger Kerri Nelson who is dropping by to chat up her new release Courting Demons and much more.  The Daily Dose is delighted to host Kerri on her blog tour and I hope you'll find her as enchanting as I do and don't miss the giveaway opportunities at the end of the blog!

Is the Devil in the Details?

This book came to me one day while I was lounging in the bathtub.  I stared up at the ceiling and thought “what if I there was a court that ruled over demons and what if I held just such a court in my attic?”  And that’s how the concept for my latest release, Courting Demons, was born.  A water birth right there in my bathtub on a pure whim.

Then, of course, I just so happened to find this website online called TextNovel and they had a contest where you could post small excerpts of your book (easily digestible amounts that could be ‘texted’) and you could receive valuable feedback from subscribers.  Free and helpful feedback from both readers and your peers in the industry—plus a chance to win—how could I say no?

This seemed like a great idea.  I’d just post some sample (first draft) snippets from my new idea and see what folks had to say about it.  A few months later, I was wrapped up in a nearly year-long contest.  I had to post a certain number of words by a certain date and the general public could follow my novel along and comment and vote on which novels they liked best (hopefully mine).

When all was said and done, I came in number 6 with votes, had hundreds and hundreds of followers, my book was a Top Editor Pick and this book was ultimately chosen as a Top 10 (out of hundreds of novels) Finalist by a major NY publisher!  And that’s just the beginning of the story of how this book came to be.  The rest of the whirlwind story some of you know and some of you don’t know but let’s just suffice to say that all that drama started with a bath.

One which I sometimes, in retrospect, wonder might have been possessed by the devil.  After all, I just had one little idea while floating amongst my rubber duckies in the tub.  As they say, the devil is in the details or is it the bath water?  So, as I launch my massive book release tour for Courting Demons, I’m giving away a devil duck to help inspire you during one of those possessed…err…I mean “productive” baths in your future.

And tell me about where you are when you get your ideas?  If you’re a writer, where are you most often inspired with new story ideas?  If you’re a reader, what are some of the most ‘devilish’ story ideas you’d like to see written about from your fave authors?

Thanks for joining me today and a special shout out to my paranormal hostess with the mostess, Heather.

Courting Demons

Paisley Barton was already having a bad day before she turned her husband into a rat.
First, she was fired by her boss and then came home to find hubby in the shower with a naked blonde chick. They say that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned but this break-up may just unleash hell on Earth when Paisley casts a spell of vengeance against her philandering husband.

After her spell casting inadvertently opens a portal between dimensions, Paisley finds her family home transformed into a nightly courtroom for settling disputes between demons of the underworld and she’s the judge! If that’s not enough, she’s got to deal with a charming, ancient demon named Camden who wants to be her personal bodyguard while trying to explain her husband’s sudden, mysterious disappearance to sexy police Detective Dalton Briggs.

But Paisley will show them all that an everyday working mom is better equipped than most to deal with the mystical mayhem…and with a tempting demon hottie and a flirtatious young detective vying for her affection, she soon learns that being single again isn’t so bad after all.

  1. Hi Kerri!
Really enjoying your book tour! Super blog entry today! It’s amazing how and when ideas appear! Very cool story about your book’s evolution. Guess it’s just one of those things that’s meant to be! ;-)
I often get ideas when I'm in the shower or doing mundane chores like washing dishes. (Maybe water is the key?) Seriously, any time I let my brain coast and let my imagination come to the forefront, there's no telling what will pop out!

  2. @Rebecca~So true. Hopefully the fact that it was a LONG time coming means it will be well received. I hope. I totally believe in the water as an inspirational conduit--wonder if anyone has ever tried to do a study on that? Hmmm... Thanks again for your continued support.

  13. I can see a bubble bath being a great place for inspiration. I would think a hot tub would be a pretty good place to brain storm.
