Six Sentence Sunday: Once Her Man, Always Her Man

Releasing this April is the first of five sexy 1Night Stand's in the Always a Marine subseries.  First up is recapturing a first love in the battle plans of Captain Luke Dexter and his high school sweetheart Rebecca Ranier or is one night just too little too late for this passionate couple?

The valet probably hadn’t even parked his car yet. The coward’s way out.
Luke Dexter wasn’t a coward.
Not anymore.
He glanced back at the all-too-knowing text message. Life doesn’t always offer a second chance….

Snow White & The Huntsman

I admit, I've never been the biggest fan of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, but between Once Upon a Time, the upcoming Julia Roberts Mirror, Mirror and the Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth Snow White & The Huntsman, I have to say, that may very well change.

Six Sentence Sunday: Brave Are the Lonely

I've been blog touring all month for Brave Are the Lonely, so I thought I would drop by for six more sentences from the recently released Fevered Hearts book.  Kid's subplot continues in this installment, the youngest Kane man has his own issues and struggles.

"He’ll get them to Dorado.” Kid glanced away from the trail to Cody. “Thanks for your help back there.”
“Hmm.” Cody grunted and swung, his fist catching Kid square in the jaw and throwing the boy on the ground. He spared a half smile when Kid groaned and rubbed his face. “Next time you say an hour, be an hour.”

Vampire Diaries Post Mortem: 1912

Last night's episode was one of the best in a long while, not for the 'shocking' twists but for the beats of the story, the tapestry that is the underlying mythology of the show: the Salvatore brothers and their love for one woman: Elena.

Murder Brings The Story Together

When I first heard about this episode, most of the spoilers and news focused on Cassidy Freeman's guest spot as Sage.  It sounded an awful lot like we were going to be spending a lot of time with Sage and I wasn't entirely sure why. Fortunately, the episode was far more than just an introduction to the vampire seductress who told Damon to go for the button down type (and by the way, when they said we were going to learn how Damon went from just feeding to seducing, I thought we would get a heck of a lot more than we did, but no complaints really).

The episode opens in 1912 with Zachariah Salvatore and Sheriff Forbes parting ways late on a cold evening. As Mr. Salvatore crosses the quad, he's stabbed by an unseen assailant (this is of course after mentioning that another town founder had been similarly slain).  Parallels beautifully with the 2012 murders happening in Mystic Falls which have already claimed the lives of Bill Walters, Bill Forbes and nearly the life of Alaric Saltzman.

Vampire Diaries Post Mortem: All My Children

After four long weeks, The Vampire Diaries returns tonight. It's only for three weeks and then we get another hiatus (I hate this time of year) because we are counting down to the season finale which will air on May 10.  But for now, let's turn our clocks back four weeks, to the episode following Dangerous Liaisons and the soul crushing hurt dished out to Delena fans when Elena reacted badly to Damon's overprotectiveness and he got even with surgical precision by bedding Rebekah.

Elijah Wants Answers

Elijah knew something was up with Elena at the party, he's suspicious of his mother's burning of sage for her silence spells and how much time she is spending with Finn. He goes with these instincts and invites Elena out to 'talk.'  Elena who was already feeling guilty about giving her blood to his mother confesses all of it (I loved that Elijah pointed out her heart rate gave her away, it's nice when the vamps get to be vamps).  So Elijah drop kicks a hole in the ground and carries Elena down into the tunnels.

He lets the boys know he has Elena and they will find a way to stop his mother or Rebekah will kill her.  This could go either way, after all Stefan's been blowing Elena off and Damon's still ticked (although he didn't seem to mind Elena's jealousy when she discovered Damon and Rebekah together).

Paperback Heroes: The Cowboy

The cowboy is one of my all time favorite heroes.  From the ranges of the old west to the deepest, darkest parts of space, the cowboy is a hero for the ages.   My love of cowboys was one of the reasons I started writing my Fevered Hearts series.

Cowboys have mystique that pervades the American culture. Their legendary status of the cowboy riding off into the sunset is as iconic as the days gone by of the old west where they rode.  Real cowboys did exist, their reputations were only enhanced by the tales and penny novels written about them.

Hell, some of my favorite cowboys are fictional cowboys. In Marshal of Hel Dorado, we met the lawgiver cowboy,  Sam Kane.  The Marshal's extended family provides a wide array of cowboys to choose from including the noble and loner cowboys.

The Noble Cowboy

You know the type? He's the Adam Cartwright (Bonanza), the Heath Barclay (The Big Valley), the Rowdy Yates (Rawhide).  He actually works with cattle, he sleeps under the stars and he works with his hands.  He's the prototypical cowboy who relies on his wits, his strength and his skill to survive against the odds and to bring his herds in.   In the Fevered Hearts series, Micah Kane is the noble cowboy.  He manages The Flying K ranch, he trains the horses, and he stands up for his people and his family.  (Micah's story releases in Autumn).

The Loner Cowboy

A second prototype, the loner is a drifter who wanders around the periphery of others.  He avoids the company of other men or limits his contact to just a few.  He's often viewed with suspicion or mistrust, no one is ever quite certain of his motives, but that is because he comes from a troubled past.  But the loner keeps his secrets close to his heart, fiercely protective of that small handful he lets into his life and when the time is right, he is ready to step up as the hero he was meant to be. Clint Eastwood excelled as the loner cowboy.  In Brave Are the Lonely, Cody is very much the loner.  (Cody's story releases Tuesday).

Six Sentence Sunday - The Love Thieves

The value of the Fortunate Buddha is not the precious stones or metals, but the legend of good luck it brought to the temple visitors who made a wish and a prayer while rubbing its ruby-studded belly.

Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon and the truth.
Buddha

Today's excerpt is from my upcoming romantic suspense series.  The first book to be released in April.

Releasing in April

Max met Anya's gaze with frank appreciation and barely checked the urge to beckon the nymph in her sexy-as-sin black dress with tousled hair piled into an artful display. She looked like she'd just rolled out of bed. He nearly groaned at the image, because he'd love to roll her right back into that bed.
“Do you know her?” Roberta’s tone climbed, a thin wire of high-pitched annoyance vibrating beneath the words.
“Our paths have crossed from time to time.”

Some Days Are Harder Than Others

Some days are just harder than others.  It's a simple fact of life. A simple fact for everyone.  Some days are harder because too much is being demanded of us. Some days are harder than others because we demand too much of ourselves.

The last few months have been among the best and the hardest in my life. I've submitted books, run through edits, had to dig deep and dig hard to pour my emotions out on the page.  Some days that's easier than others.

Sometimes, we get so used to someone else needing us, that we forget what it's like when they don't.  I woke up this morning knowing I have a full manuscript worth of edits due tomorrow night. I've been struggling with some because I kept going back to where the story started, that moment of critical mass, but why that moment? Why not the others?

Because some days are harder than others and that day was hard for both of my characters.  But until I tried to write before that moment, I didn't realize just how hard.  The day this manuscript starts is a day when the whole world is depending on these two individuals and they don't even realize it. The world pivots on this singular moment, it changes everything.  But the ripples of that change aren't truly comprehended until the last page.

The smell of the town swiped at him. Seared meat, cooked onions, damp hay, mud, aging grass, tobacco, and sweat assaulted Cody’s nose. He curled his hands impatiently as the gates behind him closed before the inner gates opened. The wolf clawed at his insides, but he choked off the need to growl. The sun was a memory behind the mountain, turning the low horizon red beneath the curtain of night.
“State your business.”
