Combined Boot Camp with Candace Havens - New Start Date

Just a heads up, I'll be teaching a combined boot camp with Candace Havens in September. Class kicks off on Monday September 10 and runs four weeks. What can you expect in the class?

Combined Boot Camp
Beginning September 10, 2012.
Do you need motivation? Do you need a place to start? Do you just need to write that book burning in your mind? If so, then this is the workshop for you. Multi-published and bestselling authors Candace Havens and Heather Long will put you through the paces with their new Writer's Bootcamp. Fast Draft creator Candace Havens and her top graduate Heather Long will provide you with the tools you need to write your book in a month—that's right, develop, write, and edit in four weeks of class.

What You Need To Know:

Week One – The first seven days of class are all pre-writing work and warm-ups. You will do your research, you will answer Heather's top ten questions of what you need to know before you start writing that book. You will get some time management techniques for creating writing windows in your fast draft weeks and you will warm up your words per hour with sprints. You will develop your plot, your characterization and your storytelling – and you will do it in seven days.

Week Two and Three – You will be Fast Drafting with Candy and Heather, you will meet your word count goals, you will write your prose. At 5,000 words a day, you can complete a 50,000 word book in 10 days. In 14, you will write a 70,000 word book. Do you have to write a 50 to 70K book? No, you can write more or you can write less, but you will write every day. The goal is to finish your book in fourteen days.

Week Four – Revision Hell – Like Nora Roberts says, "you can't edit a blank page." Fresh off your Fast Draft, Candy and Heather will put you through your paces on revising and polishing your story to make it the best possible product for submission. You will get key tips on editing out passive writing, identifying flaws, finding overuse of words or phrases – and filling in any blanks that you may have left due to research.

This Combined Bootcamp will require that you write, and write hard, but also that you dream bigger. Candy and Heather will be with you every step of the way. You will benefit from Candace Havens' tried and true method of Fast Drafting as well as the successful experiences of Fast Draft graduate Heather Long.

Motivation is a big part of what they do. By the time you finish this class, you will have a polished manuscript ready for submission. A random drawing for four 25-page critiques will be taken from the student roster; these will be line-edit critiques. Class space is limited, so sign up today!
Cost is $40.

Register today! I hope to see you there! We're going to kick it hard!

Chocolate and Sex with Guest Blogger Virginia Nelson

Heather, first off, I want to say thanks for having me on the blog today.  Secondly, I want to thank you for inspiring one of the sexier scenes in my new release with Decadent Publishing, Taking Control.
When I sat down and wanted to write a 1Night Stand story, I had tons of ideas.  Tons.  I wanted to take the reality TV idea and blend it into a sexy story of what happens after the show ends.  What happens when you have to live with the infamy—and fat check—that came from the total destruction of your social life?
I also wanted to write about chocolate and sex.  Heather once mentioned in a blog that chocolate releases the same endorphins in the brain as sex.  (She mentioned it in reference to ChocolateDay—the alternative holiday to Valentine’s Day…)
This got me to thinking.  If chocolate releases the same chemicals as sex…what happens when you mix chocolate AND sex.
Double whammy, that’s what.
So, the very sexy scene involving chocolate powder in Taking Control, my 1Night Stand story was entirely inspired by the idea of the Double Whammy.
Thanks for that, Heather!!
For everyone else, if you want to read the scene, check out my new release!

Blurb:
Looking for Love...
When she got voted off "Find Your Hubby," a reality tv gameshow, Mellie gave up on finding love.
 In all the wrong places...
Everyone knows that you are more likely to get hit by lightning than find a husband once you’re 40. Using the last of her winnings in a spur of the moment fling, she pays for a matchmaking service that offers you the perfect person-For One Night Only.
Can you buy passion?
When the 'perfect person' they find her is a woman, she first questions their selection service...Then her own desires.

WIN A FREE COPY:
Tell me, what do you love to pair with chocolate? Comment below and one lucky commentator will win a free copy of Taking Control!

Sunday Snippet: Micah & Mrs. Miller

It's release day for Hels's Gauntlet and the countdown is truly on for the release of Yesterday's Heroes (just a month go folks), but I thought I'd give my Fevered fans a little present. Here's an unedited excerpt of Micah & Mrs. Miller which will be released this October. Micah's in San Antonio to pick up the new school teacher.

***

The watch in his pocket warned him that time ran shorter, so he decided on his hunger. Halfway to his favorite café, he hesitated. The teacher might be hungry after her long haul in the coach and it wouldn't hurt her to get a bit of stretch before they hitched up again and started the long ride back to Dorado.
His stomach growled, but his conscience answered with a snarl. Forty minutes till the coach's arrival. He diverted and headed to the station.  Five minutes later, he was glad he did because the coach arrived early. The team of horses pounded in on a cloud of dust and dug their heels in to stop, the red and yellow coach bouncing on its wheels. The driver tied off the reins and began tossing down the bags before the station master got the steps down and the door open. A small crowd gathered, with shouts of welcome and greeting for a burly looking man with heavy jowls and a bum leg. A wife—at least Micah presumed she was a wife—hurried forward to greet him with a kiss. Three littles flocked around his legs and demanded hugs and presents. He limped away with his family.
The second one off was a diminutive Asian, his slanted eyes housing a cold look and his expression stern. He spoke to no one and caught his bag as it tossed down.  The third one out had a wide brimmed hat and a sweet, rosy complexion.  She glanced up as her foot hovered over the first step.
"Have a care with that trunk, please." Her brisk, exotic voice went straight to his groin and Micah blinked. The accent was beautiful, her dress was the color of melted chocolate, with a high white collar and ruffles at the wrist. Her hair was hidden by the oversized hat, but his heart did a little fist squeezing when she turned. Warm brown eyes skimmed the crowd, and he knew she missed nothing.
He hurried forward as the trunk she chastised the driver about headed for the ground. Legs braced, he caught it and the air whooshed out of his lungs. He managed to set it down, but just barely. Did she travel with bricks?
"Thank you." Her crisp accent cooled from the harried sound she'd used with the driver. "I didn't want it to split open and spill the books."
Books. Bricks.
Same thing really.
"Not a problem, ma'am." Micah gave her a quick smile, and glanced at the coach. No other passengers disembarked. He frowned briefly, where was the teacher?
"I don't have much coin, but I could give you a nickel if you wouldn't mind carrying that for me." Her accent clipped the words, giving deliberate emphasis on the first syllable.
"Certainly don't have to pay me, ma'am. Be happy to deliver this for you, but I need a word with the coach man as it seems we're missing a passenger."
"Oh?" She glanced up at the dusty coach, her expression puzzled. "It has been just the three of us since Kansas."
Micah frowned. "Hmm. That doesn't bode well, my father sent me down to pick up the school teacher."
"Oh?" She turned back, her expression gentling and the warm honey of her eyes seemed to lighten. "Well that would be me, I'm Josephine Miller." She extended a lace gloved hand toward him and Micah stared.
"You're far too pretty to be a school teacher."

Release Day Happiness: Hels's Gauntlet Available at 12:01 a.m. tonight

It's funny, three years ago, my daughter and I went to the swimming pool every day. She swam and I wrote. It was the beginning of writing every day exercise--even if it was just a few hundred words. I pushed myself to do it and tomorrow, Hels's Gauntlet releases.  I love this book for so many reasons, not the least of which it took a full trilogy for me to tell the whole story of how Cassie, Jacob, and Helcyon fell in love, try to make their relationship work and face all the challenges their lives threw at them.

When I wrote the first book, Cassandra's Dilemma, I had this very particular image of Helcyon in my mind, yet it didn't seem to play out that way on the page, but little by little through the first and into the second, that Helcyon I had seen when I dreamt up this idea, took shape and in the third book, he dazzled me. He became the hero I'd imagined from the first word on the first page and yes, I was delighted. It's been a long and sometimes bumpy ride.

While Hels's Gauntlet marks the conclusion of the Cassie, Jacob, Helcyon trilogy, it opens the door for future Forbidden Legacy books and I can't wait to walk through them and see where they go.  You can read excerpts via the links below including the adults-only excerpt. I hope you enjoy the novel as much as I have!

After facing down the Wizarding Council and defeating their enemies, Helcyon, Cassandra, and Jacob have begun to find a balance in their triad. Cassie stunned her partners with news of her pregnancy, and the stakes are raised as the men must consider what potential her child will have. Government pressure increases, bombings disrupt Wizard and Fae business around the world, and splinter groups among the Fae make themselves known.
With the Danae on the hunt to bring Cassandra back to her side, Helcyon must block her every maneuver to shield his mate and best friend from a promise that dates back a thousand years. The shifting of oaths leads to the awakening of ancient powers, but history is unforgiving, and the arrival of Hels’s brother adds a new complication that could destroy their futures before they even begin. When a dangerous gambit forces Jacob and Helcyon to make hard choices, Cassie must trust that her lovers will survive the gauntlet.

Hot Summer Heroes Blog Hop: Thorgasm Alert

I have a new definition for a "hot summer hero" courtesy of my favorite Nordic (and yes I know the actor is Australian) squeeze: Thor.  See, just last week, I had a little Thorgasm sitting in the theater during a preview for the upcoming remake of Red Dawn. As you may (or may not) be aware, Christopher Hemsworth (Thor) stars in the remake in the role of Jed--the part played by Patrick Swayze in the original. I admit to having a great deal of initial trepidation about the idea that they were remaking  a film, that for me, was a classic of my childhood.

The original movie scared the crap out of me with the idea of what "could" happen in the U.S. were invaded, not to mention, it broke my heart to see the heroes--all kids--die before the movie ended. (I would say spoiler alert but it's um--30 years old, so--sorry).  Anyway, when I heard about the movie, I wanted to say I wouldn't see it because I didn't want them to remake a film that had such deep meaning for me.

Then they cast Christopher Hemsworth.

I experienced a tearing sensation in my mind--the kind of tearing that clenches you up and makes you bang your head against the floor. Why? Because I adore Hemsworth and so far, I've loved him in every part he's played. So, still torn, I sat there in the theater as the preview for Red Dawn began and one line turned my whole world upside down.

"You're in the Air Force aren't you?"

Hemsworth's character: "Marines, actually."

Oh. My. God.

Christopher Hemsworth is playing a Marine. Yep. Total Thorgasm right there and then. My love for my Marines in the 1NS Always a Marine series is extremely high -- as high as my love of superheroes. Marrying the two in the form of one actor whom I already adore? Yes, this movie has become the no brainer for me to go and see.

You see, superheroes and real heroes are what the hot summer hero are all about for me.

On the Road Again and All Kinds of News

I feel like I've just gotten back from RWA 12 in Anaheim (and damn don't I miss those 70 degree days) and now it's time for me to hit the road for AADNOLA.  The truth is, I've been home for a week, but I've been writing like a mad woman. I've got some exciting projects coming up that I can't wait to announce, but will save that for another time.

In the meanwhile, I was sorry that I hadn't had a chance to blog more and especially since there has been a lot of blog worthy news.

First up, Disney just announced that Joss Whedon will definitely be writing and directing Avengers 2. Yes, this is a no brainer for me, too--but I am THRILLED that they've made it official.

Next, Hels's Gauntlet, the third and final part of the Helcyon/Cassie/Jacob trilogy that kicked off my Forbidden Legacy series will be released from Siren on August 19.  For those of you attending the first Siren Romance Convention in Dallas that weekend-yep, I'll be there too! (And that's just a little over a week away).

I've got some exciting news about my Chance Monroe series, after nearly ten months of languishing after the close of Sapphire Blue Publishing, it's getting a bit of a facelift and a new home-so stand by for that info. You'll also finally get to read the third book that was never released. (Yes, this is my happy dancing over here!)

In the love to learn department, I've got several workshops coming up including Deborah Blake's Witchcraft on a Shoestring this August and Witchcraft 201 in September.  Also in September, starting right after Labor Day, I will be teaching a combined boot camp with the fantastic and ever wonderful Candace Havens. Spots are limited in all these classes.

As I write this, I am deep into finishing my third Fevered Hearts book which will be released on October 2 and I can't begin to describe the craziness that's happening to my Fevered, the Kanes, and the town of Dorado itself. I'm also going to start sharing some snippets from that very soon.

So stay tuned for more details as soon as I am back from AAD NOLA along with some fun stories. If you don't follow my author page on Facebook, this might be the week to do it. I'm going to post some questions and games for prizes while I'm gone!

Talk to you on the flip side.
