Rites of Spring: You Never Forget the First Time...

Spring is about renewal. It's a beginning. A fresh start. It's also about making magic. You never forget the first time you...
  • Read a romance
  • Went skiing
  • Had a child
  • Wrote a book
  • Shared a first kiss
  • Published a book
  • Had a best seller
These are the moments that stand out for me when I think of those magical firsts. I debated a little what I wanted to share today--would it be a book? A first for a character? Or would it be something more personal? I decided the split the difference.

Escape from Desire

My grandmother used to read Harlequin romances to me when I was a kid. She didn't like picture books, so she would read me her romances. She loved Harlequin, read them up to the day she died. I used to give her subscriptions to her favorite series...and the Presents line remained her primary go to from the first. In 1983, I read my very first Harlequin on my own. I remember being shocked by the fact that the characters didn't nap or clean as often as my grandmother used to say they did and even more shocking...I loved the story so much I wanted to read another and another and another.

That first romance novel was Escape from Desire by Penny Jordan.

Escape from Desire
What I remember most about the book was the adventure. Tamara went to the Caribbean to vacation, little did she know she would find herself captured by rebels or that her only hope was Zach Fletcher, a man who was also a prisoner.

Their flight through the jungle had me on the edge of my seat and their passionate clinch amidst all the danger seemed natural, even then. But the spider bite Tamara got? That creeped me out. Worse was when Tamara finally woke up in a hospital and Zach was gone. My heart broke for her. When she turned up pregnant, that shocked me--it was a first for me in any book. Worse, when she found herself facing Zach again and they had all this passion and tension and secret between them...my pulse raced.

I've never looked back from my love of romances. Not once. Hard to believe that I read this book thirty years ago, but like Tamara, I went on my magical vacation and my life was changed forever.

  5. My first real romance book was paradise by Judith McNaught. This is the book that started me on the path to reading great romance books.

My favorite thing about spring is all the plants coming back up and that it starts to stay light out later. I love to sit outside and read in the evening.

  13. Wow, first romance novel? I really don't remember but I know if I go way back the first novel I read that even touched on "romance" was a Sweet Valley High book in, I believe, about 4th grade! I can remember the cover of the book perfectly (if there were Sweet Valley High fans here from the 80's they'd likely know the one, mint green cover with one of the twins standing behind, brushing the hair of a girl with frizzy hair I think... wow long time ago but this brought the memory back :P) Anyway, that's the first book that I recall touching on romance so it would likely be the one that began to open the doors to it, though it would be quite a few years before moving up to things with steamier romance!

Now for the question about Spring. My very favorite thing about spring is opening up the windows again. I am starting to miss the fresh air! I like winter and snow, all that good stuff, but only to a point and at this point it would sure be nice to get a little spring coming. It might be nice to see a few flowers poking up out of someone’s yard as well (I don’t have a green thumb but I like looking at other peoples flowers!)
Thank you for the chance to enter the giveaway and happy spring everyone!

  49. I actually don't remember the title, but it had a really interesting plot: a rich girl that heard a guy she had a crush on laugh at her when she was an "ugly duckling" teen, so she grows up, becomes beautiful and applies for a job at his house to get her revenge on him - to make him fall in love with her and them dump him, but she doesn't count on falling in love with him too.

My goodness, I cannot remember my first romance novel. I don't think I really got into reading romance until my 20s. The first one that I remember reading is Fantasy Lover by Sherrilyn Kenyon. It started my love for PNR! :)
