Bad Witch Rising #MySexySaturday Sneak Peeks

“Jaime!” Where the hell was he? I ran for the truck. It didn’t provide much in the way of shelter, but it did have a shotgun.
I jerked the thankfully unlocked door open and grabbed the weapon from the rack behind the seat. Bullets wouldn’t kill the vampire, but I don’t think even it could walk without knees.
Or elbows.
Double-checking the load, I snapped the gun shut and scanned the field. The thrashing sounds grew fainter until only the whiff of the breeze brushing the hay remained.
Even the stench was gone.
A rustle at the edge of the field spun me in place. I braced myself, shotgun primed, and took aim.
The hay parted against black fur, dark as midnight and low to the ground.
Panther.
In Virginia?
My brain wrestled with my vision’s report. The cat was long, easily six feet of body clearing the hay before the tail flicked behind it. Squat with thick muscular legs, it prowled across the green belt.
Hands tense, I laid my finger flat against the side of the trigger. The dim light did nothing to diminish the powerful muscles rippling along the cat’s furred body. It approached low, not quite stalking.
He yowled a low, long note, revealing a row of teeth that made the vampire’s fangs look like toothpicks. Three feet away from the point I knew I’d have to take the shot, the cat paused, dropping to sit on its haunches.
Staring.
At me.
I lowered the gun a fraction.
The cat’s long tail twitched. A magnificent creature, his flat, broad features tilted upward. An oversized Romeo, though I doubt either feline would appreciate the comparison.
My palms were damp against the gun. I really didn’t want to hurt the beast. I likely owed it my thanks, because—well, it had to be what spooked the vampire.
Wary, I dropped the gun a fraction more. “Go on, kitty, shoo.”
Shoo, kitty? Really?
A wordless pulse of energy flashed through me.
Masculine energy.
Very masculine.
Very familiar.
“Jaime?”
Wise brown eyes gazed at me, patient and a little sad.

“Oh. I bet you want to tell me now.”

#MySexySaturday - Kid and Evelyn's First Kiss from Raising Kane

Raising Kane

His fingers bit into her arms and, though the deep scratches had mostly healed, the sting still broke through her mania. She looked up at him and their gazes clashed. “I am the real me.” His voice deepened to something sterner than she’d ever heard him sound.
“No, I know what I did. I—why aren’t you gone? You should be gone.” She’d closed down the channel. It always made the conjuring go away. It had worked all day long, while the shaman tortured her with abomination after abomination.
His mouth compressed into a thin line and his grip gentled, but he didn’t let her go. “Evelyn, it’s me. You didn’t conjure me. I followed you down here.”
I am not this whimsical. If anything, she was too practical. She thought everything through, she was deliberate and he smelled so good and felt better. It didn’t make any sense. Closing her eyes, she tried to calm her ragged breathing, but her heart slammed against her ribs like a wild thing seeking escape. If she calmed down, she could erase the conjure, it would work.
A hard, impatient breath touched her cheek and she startled to find him leaning into her, his mouth just a scant inch from her own. “It’s me,” he repeated and then his lips brushed over hers, a warm teasing caress. “It’s me, Evelyn. I’m right here.”
The touch sizzled and her mouth opened. He shuddered—or maybe it was her—and then the teasing caress turned firm and his mouth closed over hers. The sweep of his tongue demanded entry and she welcomed it. She melted into him and desire flamed through her. The kaleidoscope burst and color fountained up, burning through the confusion and the pain and the grief and a tiny moan escaped her throat.
She drifted on the torrent, rising and falling to the feel of his tongue twining with hers. Heat enfolded her and then he jerked back. His pupils were so wide, the darkness flared out to drown the blue. Her breath came in hot, jagged little pants.
“Dammit,” he swore and peeled her hands off of him. Spinning on his heel, he turned with another jerk and strode off. Not evaporated. Not disappeared. He walked—away.
What the hell just happened?

My Favorite Guilty Indulgence #NdulgentHop

Take Me Back to the Beginning

It's funny, when I signed up for this blog hop it was to celebrate a blog I really enjoy and because it sounded like fun. So I had to think about what guilty indulgence do I really have? Over the last few years, we've had to do a lot of belt tightening and there's been changes in my personal and professional life. Mini Me is growing up and her schedule and needs are more demanding. Most of the time, my resources are poured into three things: bills, the kiddo, and the animals. This doesn't often leave a lot of leftover for me.

But I do have some allowances, and every now and then I get to pick something to go and do for me. So here are a few of my favorite things:

1. Manicures and Pedicures - if I have one vanity, it's my nails. Seriously. I like to have nice nails. First and foremost I type 18 hours a day so a snagging nail or a cracked one makes it hard to type. But there's just something about a fresh coat of polish and the foot massage that really makes me smile.

2. Massages - While this may seem like a no brainer, I had a problem with two compressed nerves in 2011 that left me in agony whether I was sitting or standing. Even lying on my back hurt like hell. You couple that with long hours of typing and I get a lot of knotted muscles. Between the therapy for the back and the massages, this helped. When I went through weight loss last year, I used to get a massage every thirty days if I could--it helped everything and kept my stress levels manageable. So while I make practical allowance for this guilty indulgence it remains one!

3. Scandal - I love good television whether it's Vampire Diaries, Castle, Grey's Anatomy or Arrow, but I adore Scandal. It rapidly became the show I had to watch to find out what the hell would happen next and even when my jaw is on the floor, I'm over the moon at the same time.

4. Good books - Yep, another no brainer. I'm an author, of course I like good books, but I can't always turn off my inner editor so I need books that suck me in and don't let me go. Fortunately, I have a lot of go to authors that I can curl up and read. With deadlines, life and the kiddo--sometimes those books are my only escape and I sink into them and let them carry me away from the world. I may need sleep, but this is one guilty indulgence I won't give up just for a few hours of shut eye.

So what are your guilty indulgences? I'm giving away a PDF copy of the winner's choice from my Fevered Hearts or Always a Marine series to one lucky commentator.

My #FridayReads Pick: Resolutions by Teri Riggs

My #FridayReads pick! What readers are saying: "The action and suspense were nonstop." & "I love the sexual tension between Eve and Mac. The hot, steamy Colombian jungle makes a great backdrop for a love story that begins with two ex-lovers on the run."

What I'm saying: It's a tense, nail biter of a read. It's got some serious violence and some twists and turns, and hot, stubborn characters that occasionally you wanted to smack their heads together. Looking for a great weekend read? This is it. Be warned: it contains a hard headed alpha male, an equally stubborn alpha female, some intense torture, and a love story at the heart of all of this that makes you root for them to get it together...

DEA agent Eve Taylor has had her fill of alpha males. When Resolutions’ operative and former lover, threatened her hard-earned independence, she ran. On a mission to gather evidence against a Colombian drug-lord, Eve discovers the drug-lord is helping terrorists plan an attack on American soil. Before she can escape with the vital information, she’s captured and comes face to face with her mortality…

As a teen, Mac watched his family fall apart after his mother died doing dangerous U.N. work. The possibility of losing Eve to a mission ignited an overwhelming need to protect her. When he forced her to choose him or her job, she walked away. Two years later, it seems all his nightmares have come true and he’s tasked with rescuing her from a Colombian prison. Mac has never stopped loving Eve, but does he dare risk his heart when he’s so terrified of losing…

On the run, Mac and Eve must learn to trust each other again in order to stay alive.

Note: Resolutions is a private black ops agency specializing in the near-impossible extractions of kidnap victims, hostages, and all forms of intelligence other agencies have failed to retrieve.

Contains explicit violence.

Sunset on Summer Fun: Or What Did I Do This Summer?

You remember in school how we would have to write a paper about "What I Did This Summer?" I used to hate that paper. I don't know whether it was because it was the end of summer and I had to think about all the fun I wouldn't be having or because what I did that summer wasn't particularly interesting.

Summer Fun

The best part of summer is the freedom so associated with it. Even today when I don't get a three month holiday from school, I do get a break from the day to day demand of the Mini's schedule. I don't have to get up early every day nor do I have to be in bed by a certain time every night. Summer is also hiatus for a lot of television shows, but it's also a time for new favorites to make their debut (thank you Beverly Hills 90210 the original brand for giving us fresh programming in the summer months). In addition to all of these things, summer is about the big movies and big book releases--it's about entertainment.

What Did I Do This Summer?

It was a crazy year in the Long household (though I guess every year actually qualifies, but since we're not talking about every other year...) I had seven new releases this summer, eight if you include the beginning of May! First up at the very beginning of May was the second book in my Chance Monroe series, while it was a re-release, the book underwent significant editing and I wrote additional scenes for our hedge witch from Northern Virginia:

Plan Witch From Out of Town

That was five Marines:

Always a Marine

Yep, I said five! From Matt McCall's book to Derek Green's - I had a Marine for everyone and boy did I love these stories!

What else did I release? We had the second book in the Soulgirls series:

Taking the Stage

Anthony and Roseatre cracked me up and we had white tigers...sorry, I was thinking about the cats. And last, but certainly not least was the fifth, and highly anticipated Fevered Hearts novel Raising Kane. Kid Kane's book is one I have been wanting to write since I first introduced the character and I think I fell in love with him all over again.

Raising Kane

Whew. Sorry, it's getting a little warm in here. Like I said, it's been a really crazy summer. You throw in trips to Atlanta and Savannah for RWA and Authors After Dark respectively, and the crazy just keeps on coming! Overall though, I can't complain, at least this year's what I did last summer was interesting!

As we dive into autumn here in Texas, it's still sweating weather outside and hard to get into the harvest mood. I gaze north with great envy for all those unpacking their sweaters and huddling on the chilly nights. Still, Halloween is right around the corner and after this summer--I bet it's going to be just as crazy.

What did you do this summer?

Back to School with Mahalia Levey #SneakPeek at Forbidden Deception

While some people went back to school throughout the month of August, the majority of the U.S. will be back in the classrooms starting today. For moms like me this is a mixed bag of back to school shopping and getting back on a regular schedule and school supplies. I love school supplies! I've invited several authors to drop in this week as we celebrate back to school with some questions about their experiences with a helping of their latest romance release (or upcoming release) featuring a teacher! Be sure to drop her a comment and let us know what is your favorite part of going back to school?

Welcome Mahalia Levey!

What teacher influenced you the most? How? I didn’t really have one who influenced me at all. We had the only high school in my town until the late 1990’s.  My High school was more like a college campus in size. I graduated with almost seven hundred students in my class. That doesn’t really give much of a chance to bond with anyone.

I can tell you my second grade teacher told my mother I’d be a writer when I grew up, but I don’t remember her.

Did you love or hate the "what did you do last summer" assignment?
I loved it. I usually went on vacation every summer. I attended Camp Tawyandot a sleep away camp until I was thirteen and went into sports. After that most of my summer consisted of band camp or cheer camp.

How do the words 'back to school' make you feel? What's the first thing that pops into your head?
The first thing that pops into my head is socializing. Catching up with friends.

Name the top two qualities of your teacher character? Why did you have to write him or her as a teacher?
Ailyn is patient and nurturing and takes the time to understand the age group she teaches, knows their family situations, their educational struggles and strengths, and makes time to help outside of class and in.

She was always a teacher in my mind, where I saw her as one of the teachers who really cared and didn’t come off as fake but interested in a child’s home life, and over all happiness.

Keep up with Mahalia!

Forbidden Deception

Raising Kane is Finally Here! Interview & More!

When the spirit fever struck a town, a village or an outpost, it left few if any survivors. The white man blamed the Indian saying they used their mojo on them. The Indians blamed the white man for angering the spirits. The survivors knew it didn’t matter. The Fevered were forever changed.

A gift he needs to tame…

Kid feels what the world around him feels, he is a raw, bleeding nerve, and he can’t control the pain anymore. After lashing out at everyone he loves, he agrees to an exile atop Quanto’s mountain to learn to control the power he wields. Desperate to end it, Kid battles with Wyatt the eldest Morning Star—hoping against hope that the man will kill him. He longs only for peace…

A gift she wants to harness…

Evelyn Lang grew up with a territorial judge for a father, and a secret—her father’s Fevered ability passed to her. When he’s killed in broad daylight in a little town in Kansas after freeing a slave, Lang is no longer bound by her father’s oath to never use her ability—now she must train it. She travels across hostile territory in search of the man who trained her father. She longs only for vengeance…

Tempestuous passions, opposing needs, and impulsive decisions divide them…

Conflicting goals put Kid and Evelyn in direct opposition. Her hunger for justice cuts him, but Quanto refuses his requests to train alone. Forced to train together, they must confront their deepest fears if they are ever to achieve their greatest desire….

His pain. Her obsession. Their battle

Putting Heather on the Spot - 5 Questions for the Author

Because every release is a little different, we're kicking off our release week with a Q&A brought to you by the readers themselves! The following questions are some that I have received from readers of the Fevered Hearts series--and from my girls who were there from day one.  Do you have a question? Head over to the website and submit it or post it in a comment and I'll answer--as best I can--either here or in the next round of Q&A on Paranormal Romantics on the 9th.

Why did Molly have to die?

Let's not start with the easy question! Actually, Molly died following Kid's birth. Initially, I wanted a bachelor ranch because you have dad and his four sons, but it's also a demonstration that life in the day and age was very precarious. Jed's love for Molly was also a shining star in the story, a guiding beacon for his sons. All four want what their father found with their mother. Despite her death long before the series began, her presence remains a powerful force on the page for the Kane family. Miss Molly, of course, is the guiding force of that strong moral compass Jed infused into each of his sons.

Can the boundary ever be re-engineered and used against the Kanes to keep them in?

The boundary--you know when I first wrote Marshal of Hel Dorado and that boundary came up, I sort of sat back and went huh. That's a good thing and a bad thing. The information the Kanes have on the boundary has been very spotty and the one man who might have been able to answer those questions has never made an appearance on the page. That said, you can never say never, particularly after what we learn about the barrier in Raising Kane.

It seems like Quanto's death has been foreshadowed for the last couple of books. Is Wyatt going to take over training on the mountain when he does?

From the first chapter of the first book, Quanto's age and infirmities have mattered. He's done so much for his kids and not just their generation, of course the Morning Stars are the generation the readers are most familiar with, but in Raising Kane, you meet Edward Lang--Evelyn's father. You learn that he too trained on that mountain. So how many has Quanto trained through the years? As for Wyatt, his relationship with Quanto is a decisive force in his life. What will he do when Quanto dies? Until we're met with that deep river crossing, I really don't know.

Nothing bad has happened to Jed since the beginning. Is there going to be a point where he is in danger and they all have to use their gifts against the big bad to help him?

Hmm, I don't know that I would agree that nothing bad has happened to Jed--though most of it has happened off page. His wife died. His sons have struggled. He lost his best friend (Micah & Mrs Miller) and he saw the town he built have to be burned to the ground. That said, never say never, and it's entirely possible that we don't know all of Jed's secrets...

How many previous students left the mountain with those pendants to give to their kids to use to find their way back?

As I said above, we don't know how many have been trained by Quanto on the Mountain, though there are clues--including Katherine (mentioned in A Fistful of Dreams), and Edward Lang (Raising Kane), and others. Those pendants are out there.

Whew! Tough questions! Do you have a question about Fevered Hearts? Feel free to post. I may answer here in the comments or save it for another Q&A with Heather over on the Paranormal Romantics blog on September 9th.
