Eat, Drink & Be Scary! #HalloweenHop

It's Hallo-week! The  night to dress up in fun costumes, give away candy and to celebrate the new year that turns on Samhain and much more. It’s also a great excuse to watch and read some of my favorite whacky witches.

Fran and Jet Owens

Played by Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest respectively, these ladies raised Sally and Gillian when their mother passed away and they went a long way to teach the girls a lesson about abusing their magic. Honestly, as much as I love the whole of the Owens family of witches, it wouldn’t be the same without these bawdy broads blazing the trail.

Paige Winterbourne, Eve and Savannah Levine

These witchy women of the Otherworld are fantastic. Paige was too young and too inexperienced to handle the politics of her old world coven. To add insult to injury, Paige hooked up with the sorcerer son of the Cortez Cabal Lucas. Together, they are raising Savannah, one of the most powerful witches of all time – the product of the half-demon witch Eve and her lover, the sorcerer Kristof Nast. These women are out of this world and their magic is so much fun.

Wicked Witch of the West

No, not Elphaba in Wicked and Son of a Witch (although arguably I adore these books) but the classic Wicked Witch of the West played by Margaret Hamilton in the 1939 classic film version. Her stooped shoulders and green skin, not to mention her cackling laugh and obsessive behavior over Dorothy Gale notwithstanding, she ranks up there with Endora as one of my favorite all time witches. The books just make me love her more.

Molly Weasley

She forever won my heart with her down to earth approach to magic and her no nonsense attitude towards their enemies. Her ‘get the hell away from my daughter’ and full on battle mommy mode in the final Harry Potter book didn’t hurt either.

I love those whacky witches during every season of the year; I just get to indulge in these lists at Halloween. Of course, Chance Monroe is always on my list. The hedge witch is the main character of one of the first books I ever wrote. Want a chance to win a copy of Earth Witches Aren't Easy?  Just leave me a comment and let me know what witches do you love?

The winner will be announced on Monday, November 2!

Throwback Thursday: #TBT #Marine Ever After #milrom #lovestory

Every love story starts somewhere, and when I sat down to write Paul and Lily's book, I had no idea just how in love with these two I would fall. Yes, it's true, I have loved every single Marine book I've written, but Paul and Lily hold a very special place in my heart. I hope they do in yours, too.

Marine Ever After
Marine Paul Torres is used to the casual thing, women who enjoy the pleasure of the moment and whom he can bed with a wink and a smile.  Lately though, he’s turned on by the allure of finding the right partner for him with so many of his friends settling down.  Attending a wedding in Texas for one of his oldest friends, he meets Lillianna Hansen.
Paul and Lillianna get off on the wrong foot, enjoying a wildly passionate encounter after the wedding. He wakes to find her gone, but still tries to track down her number. Paul wants more than a one-night stand, but his limited leave is up and must return to active duty.
He might be ready to take their relationship to another level, but all Lillianna thought she wanted was a good time. But Paul’s attention—even from thousands miles away—is hard to resist and while she tells herself repeatedly she doesn’t want a relationship with a Marine, she can’t deny the consequences of their passionate night.
And when she finally does reach out, it’s to confess she’s pregnant, and she has to figure out if she’s ready to let the father of her child be her Marine ever after…

Excerpt:
Paul eyed the bridesmaid from the moment she made her entrance through the double doors. He was fourth groomsman, which meant he’d get to escort her out. Thank you, Jesus. Gorgeous was the only word that would do. Not that the other bridesmaids weren’t good looking, Jazz was a hell of a looker and if he looked too long, one of her two husbands might be inclined to take his head off.

Writer Wednesday: No Such Thing as a Perfect Formula

Decades ago, I recall having a conversation with a creative writing teacher in high school. She looked down her nose at the books I had in my backpack (at any given time I carried four or five books because I used to devour them during the day) and I’d made the unforgiveable error of pulling out a Harlequin romance novel at the end of her class to read. This singular act earned her disdain—how could I read such tripe? Didn’t I know the books were formulaic?

Beyond the fact that a teacher should never bag on a student for reading, judgmental snots are not my thing. Also worth mentioning, she told me she’d never bothered to read one. So how the hell would she know anyway?

A couple of years later, a journalism instructor in college snorted when she saw me sprawled on the steps near the lake reading, yep, you guessed it a Harlequin. She folded her arms, gave me this long, level stare then said, “Reading those will rot your brain. They all follow a formula, no way to be original.”

Uh huh. In the war between fiction (not real) and non-fiction (just the facts), she couldn’t provide me with comprehensive evidence of her thesis statement. Just saying.

Then in my twenties, when I worked at an IT company, I was reading a romance—it may or may not have been a Harlequin at that point—and eating my lunch outside when one of my co-workers sat across from me, snagged the book and snorted. “It’s all plug and play, I could write a computer program with a handful of variables and generate a hundred of these in a week.”

Isn’t he special? For the record, never did see that program. I’ve written nearly a hundred books, so…definitely I possess a little more empirical evidence than he did.

Let me tell you a secret, there’s no such thing as a formula to writing a romance book. People have been looking for one for years. I hear publishers tell me all the time they have cracked the code because they had one successful book or they produced ten best sellers from a sea of hundred or more. Raw statistics will tell you the same thing, if you repeat the same thing a few hundred times, one will likely break out and strike a nerve.

Make Mine a Monday #Chat #Reading #TalkBooks #TV

Good morning! It's Monday, and I know, it's everyone's least favorite day of the week. For me it means diving into my current WIP as well as juggling a dozen other commitments. Ever think we're all way too busy?

So while you're kicking back or heading to the office or reviewing what's filled your inbox while you were running the kids to their games or looking after your grandkids or watching the first snow fall with a sense of trepidation or joy--drop in here and share with me, what are you up to this week? What are you reading? What books are coming out that you can't wait to read? What about shows? Any of them holding you hostage where you can't wait to see what happens next?

I admit Quantico has me completely wrapped as does Agents of SHIELD. Talk to me, I'm all yours! Hit me with any questions, too! I need a watercooler to chat at so we're going make mine a Monday and call this our cooler!

Sexy Saturday: Cody meets Kid for the First Time... #FeveredHearts

A little over four years ago, I released Marshal of Hel Dorado, the first of the Fevered Hearts series.  As I am working on A Man Called Wyatt, the epic finale, I wanted to take a look back to some of the first meetings of the characters and while I'd intended to share Sam and Scarlett, I'd forgotten how much I loved this particular scene.

I'm working on making this book free everywhere, but it's still listed for 99 cents on Amazon and Barnes & Noble though Kobo, ARe and iBooks have it for free.

Writer Wednesday: Refilling the Well

I'm offline this week "refilling" the well. One thing writers of all types need is to remember that our muse and souls need to be fed as much as they need to express. Junk in, junk out as it were...so fun in, fun out.

For me this includes walking in the woods, listening to music, or playing at Disney World.

How do you refill your well?
